When most people go to the gym, they think about how they’re becoming and staying healthy to live a long and fulfilling life.

Some people are there to bulk up, while others just want to maintain their fitness.

Samuel Kiwasz, 67, was at his gym in Culver City, California, for a normal morning workout. He’d arrived at the gym before 6 a.m. and was just about to start his workout.

The retired teacher had just stepped onto a treadmill when the unthinkable happened: A car came crashing through the wall. Samuel was looking at his phone when he was suddenly hit by shattered glass.

A car then smashed into his treadmill, throwing him backward.

Samuel was flung into the wall as the car continued to speed at him. The treadmill he was on took the brunt of the crash, stopping the car. Although in shock, Samuel wasn’t seriously injured — he threw himself to the ground to avoid the moving car and treadmill.

The woman who was driving the car — a red Mercedes SUV — seemed out of it when she opened the door and got out of her car. She didn’t seem to realize that anyone was injured or that she had just driven through a building.

She even tried to get back into her car, but an off-duty police officer who was working out at the gym intervened and stopped her.
